TRIUMPH FOR SELECTRIX - SELECTRAIL
Selectrail is a division of Selectrix Industries located in Thomastown, Victoria and is considered a newcomer to the rail industry (20 years’ experience is still a newcomer in this traditional industry sector).
In conjunction with joint venture partners Frauscher, based in Austria, Selectrail has recently won a major infrastructure project requiring development and delivery of an Axle Counting System to be commissioned in New Zealand. David Stuckey, Managing Director of Selectrix (who employs around 40 people Australia wide), felt very much like the "little guy from Thomastown" when he tendered for the significant flagship project within Australasia, the new Train Detection System installation in Auckland, New Zealand. Along with traditional players in the rail industry, Mr Stuckey went through the tender process and triumphed in September 2009. The win added 50% to their immediate turnover.

With some 20 years' experience in developing signalling and relay switching products for the rail sector, Selectrix - Selectrail had been trialling and testing their Axle Counting System for at least seven years. Managing and maintaining rail networks worldwide is costly and unreliable and the system has been a major innovative step for the railway signalling industry, as it removes the need for expensive track maintenance. "We have had big uptake of this system in New South Wales and Victoria, but winning the New Zealand rail project was really something special" says David Stuckey. "We simply won the contract because we have a high tech, state-of-the-art signalling system combined with first class technical support".

A key challenge facing the company is R&D. "We have a number of projects on the drawing board that have some major technical hurdles, and if we can identify how to get over them, there are huge possibilities" says David Stuckey. The Federal Government's Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) through Austrade have been a great success for the company, opening markets in both Africa and South America.

David Stuckey's philosophy is simple. "You must be dynamic, innovative and passionate about both product and service. We are in a really exciting business phase and are enjoying mixing it with the global players in the railway signalling industry".
